3rd Cleator Moor Scout Group held a prize Bingo event in their church hall.  They held numerous activities, from chocolate tombola, cakes stalls, raffle and name the dog competition, in addition to the Bingo.

Well over 50 members of the public, including new children to the group, attended and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

All in all, the group raised almost £300 for the young people of the group.

Special thanks go to Michael Grealish (our district LDO), who dropped everything and helped at the last moment.

The leaders, beavers and cubs appreciate the support of parents, and members of the public.

They have fun, learn new skills and make long-lasting friends.  There are many famous scouts, including David Beckham, Tony Blair, Richard Hammond and the current US President, Barack Obama, each of them and the 24 million young people around the world were given the opportunities because of adult volunteers.

We urgently need you to volunteer some of your time so that Cumbrian boys and girls can grow up and be added to the famous list.

If you have 10 minutes or 1 night each week or 1 night a month, or any time that you can and are willing to give, then we want you and your expertise.  You don’t have to be a uniformed leader and anything you can give can be as and when you feel able to.  We will work around YOUR busy lifestyles.

So, if you live between Gosforth (in the South) and Frizington (in the North), then contact the District Commissioner, Kim Waugh to join a group in your area.

Twenty Cubs and Scouts from around the district attended a Bushcraft day hosted by Keswick Canoe and Bushcraft on the 14th of July 2012 and had a thoroughly fantastic time.  Many of them had learnt new skills, including fire lighting and shelter building and even some of the leaders got to take part to.

We arrived in the morning and went on a hike around Whinlatter Forest, returning back for a much needed break and play in the adventure playground.

Following lunch, and more play in the playground, we were met by Paul, one of the leaders teaching the 1/2 day programme who then took us to deep in the forest to meet Steve and Natalie.  The Cubs and Scouts were split into two groups, and the youngest ones were taken with Steve and Natalie to learn to build a shelter that is waterproof, sturdy and protective against the elements, before exploring the forest locale looking for twigs and fallen trees.  Natalie taught the Cubs (and leaders!) to make forest jewellery and woggles with thin roots from a fallen tree before returning to the main site for cooked marshmallows and hot cocoa.playground.

The older group were given the task of building a fire.  They were sent out to find three types of wood; tinders, kindling and then logs and built their own fires in a small clearing in the forest, following, of course, a great safety talk and practice using different fire-lighting techniques (including a new on me – charcloth!).  Once their fires were alight, they were taught how to make Bannock Bread and given the chance to make their own – messy job for some!

The fires were finally put out, dispersed and covered with moss to protect the environment.

A thoroughly enjoyable day for all who attended.  More images will be added to our Gallery when I make it.

As you can see we have a brand new website and very much under construction.  The website has been developed by Scouting Themes 4 WordPress and is based on the WordPress Blogging system.

Once the basic structure is in place, we will be updating images and making it more of a local feel to it.

Any suggestions, please let me know.
